What Is Echo Commander?
Echo Commander is a free, cooperative, turn-based strategy game. You'll team up with a friend, take command of your own advanced spaceships, and embark on a mission to hunt down a hidden enemy fleet through the vastness of space. The goal is to fire shots and locate and destroy them before they do the same to your fleet. Games are designed to be really quick and easy to get into, at 5-10 minutes a game. Plus, it's browser-based, meaning no downloads, no funky installs, and you can play on almost any device!
If the premise rings a bell—perhaps reminding you of a certain classic grid-based game involving pegs and plastic ships—then you're definitely on the right track! Our team drew a lot of inspiration from the timeless game of Battleship. Most of us have fond memories calling out “C-5!” and eagerly awaiting the “HIT!” or “SUNK!” that follows.
Quick Battleship Recap
- Each player secretly positions their ships of varying lengths on a concealed grid.
- Players then take turns announcing coordinates (e.g., “D-8,” “J-2”).
- If a called coordinate lands on a segment of an opponent's ship, it's declared a “Hit.” If it's an unoccupied square, it's a “Miss.”
- The ultimate aim is to successfully “sink” all of your opponent's ships by hitting every part of them, all while trying to keep your own fleet safe.
It's a fantastic game of deduction, strategy, and calculated guesswork.
Why Echo Commander Is Different
Echo Commander takes that beloved core concept and propels it into exciting new territory. We've built upon the foundation of hidden information and tactical targeting, expanding it with deeper strategic elements, unique roles and abilities, and a strong emphasis on cooperative gameplay.
One of the aspects we're particularly proud of is our commitment to making Echo Commander an inclusive and accessible experience. In Echo Commander, besides full screenreader support, there is a special sonar-style detection system designed to make it easier for all players—including those who are blind, have low vision, or are sighted—to effectively explore the game grid, track down enemy vessels, and fully participate in the strategic challenge.
This focus on inclusivity, the sonar system, and the game being easily accessible in your browser all stem from our core philosophy: we want everyone to be able to play together, without barriers. Whether those barriers are related to cost, accessibility needs, hardware limitations, or anything else, our goal is to create a space where friends can easily connect and share a fun, strategic experience.
